U Got Jokes is the urban comedy brand comprising of events and tours throughout the UK. We caught up with founders David Sonowo and Darren Olawale to ask them a few questions.

Tell us about the brand U Got Jokes and what inspired you to start it?
David
UGJ started in Luton in 2003, where we went to uni. To me it was inspired by Russell Simmons & Darren Olawale.
Darren
It’s like a British version of def jam comedy, so it provides a platform for urban comedians to showcase talent. We have worked with some of the top comedians on the scene including Eddie Kadi, Babatunde and Richard Blackwood to name a few. We have had shows in venues like Hackney Empire, Indigo2 and Broadway theatre, and released 5 comedy DVDs to date. The idea was actually inspired by David Sonowo. He had the idea to start a comedy show. I encouraged him to do it before someone else did (laughs).

What has been the most difficult thing about starting your business?
Darren
Cash flow, having the money readily there to implement the strategies and ideas we have to grow the brand. However, we have never allowed that to hold us back, because where money is lacking creativity is a great substitute.
David
Believing in yourself as an individual. Believing that you can achieve success from moments of self doubt. Coming from a place where there is a lot of negativity and a lack of role models has also been a challenge.

What has been the most rewarding thing about starting the brand?
David
Taking destiny into my own hands
Darren
That fact that from the beginning there was a vision and I can look back and see how far we have come. It’s been a fulfilling journey, which is still not over.

Comedy events and tours are really big at the moment. Why do you think that is?
David
I feel people want to be entertained and comedy does this.
Darren
Everyone likes to laugh. Laughing is something that just makes you feel good and comedy has always been there. I believe a lot more people are also seeing the business opportunities that come from it, and so there are a lot more shows about. And comedians themselves are realising they can have successful careers and make a healthy living out of the comedy game. So there is a new wave of comedians that are stepping up the game. The internet, because of websites like Youtube and Facebook, has also played its part. People watch comedians online and as a result want to see their live shows.

What makes U Got Jokes different from other comedy events out there?
Darren
There are many things apart from the fact that we release DVDs as well as doing live shows. One of the new things we have implemented is using the brand to empower the youth. We have run a number of event management projects, where young people get to come and work with industry experts about planning and organising events. We have also set up U Got jokes outreach, which gives young people the opportunity to find work during holidays and weekends. The process is run in a similar way to the Big issue. Young people come and pick up U Got jokes DVDs, which they sell and promote. A percentage of their earnings also goes to the Afro Caribbean Leukaemia Trust.

What advice would you give to young aspiring entrepreneurs?
David
Believe in your self fully. Also understand how the industry you want to work in is structured and run.
Darren
Find out what you are passionate about, aim to start a business in that area, and you are bound to do well. I believe it is important to enjoy your work. Also understand business is a journey like life, there will be ups and downs but the key is to remain disciplined and keep your eye on your goals. How you react to the down times will determine your success.

What can we expect from U Got Jokes in the near future?
David
Plenty more live shows and DVDs. We will be launching our own radio show later this year. And of course we will continue to support young people and charities with the launch of our new campaign ‘Have a laugh and Save a life’, it’s important to give back.

Lastly, who is your favourite comedian and why?
Darren
I would say it would have to be Babatunde, he has featured on all our DVDs apart from the last one. He has never failed to leave me in tears of laughter. I remember we did a show once, but it wasn’t the most successful and I was really down that night. But Babtundes comedy set left me in stitches, it changed my whole mood.
David
Too hard of a question, as I have three favourites, which are Kojo, Babatunde, Eddie Kadi. Kojo and Eddie Kadi, work both the business and comedy side of this industry very well. Babatunde, just cracks me up, very funny guy.

“Is it Liverpool Street station or Bank?” I asked my friend on the phone, “because TFL said Bank was the closest station.” “Google maps says Liverpool Street” she replied. I did remember the Facebook message saying Liverpool Street too and when has London transport ever been reliable. I take my chances and head to Liverpool street station to meet my friend.

We walk down Middlesex Street to the Pipeline bar. We are pretty sure we’re in the wrong place. It’s a quiet, almost empty bar, that doesn’t look at all prepared for a showcase of any sort. Just as we are about to leave, we notice a group of trendy, ‘urban’ Londoners lined up by a door in the corner of the bar. We knew we were at the right place. By this time it was 6.50pm and we queued for a couple of minutes. Then we were allowed in. We paid £6 because we arrived before 7pm. The entry fee was £8 after that.

We entered a dark candle lit basement, which had an intimate, romantic feel to it. We had a choice to sit at the tables at the back of the venue or the rows of seats that were closer to the stage. We wanted our money’s worth and this wasn’t a comedy club so I knew we’d be fine. Closer to the stage it was. We were surrounded by sociable, fashion conscious, young Londoners, who I assumed were mostly Christian. The event started virtually on time or actually on time depending on your watch.

Our host was M.y.M. A funny, bubbly and charismatic host. She owned the stage. She did the usual ritual; making a new couple feel awkward, embarrassing a young man sat alone and the expected enquiring of the demographic “anybody from North…South…East”.

The first act was a young man from The Roundhouse Poetry Collective called Toby. He did a very short poem/spoken word piece just to confirm we were actually in a writer’s lounge it seems.

Next, were the talented trio Lovelive6958. Whose talent as well as spoken word included beat boxing, singing, and playing the guitar. The passion and commitment they gave to their performance made it an enjoyable one and took us on a journey. It was one of my favourites of the night. Their set, which was about 20 minutes, was about the process of incarceration and was based on one of the members true experience.

Then Devoet was invited to the stage. The crowd went wild. He was a short dark-skinned black guy whose outfit included a bowler hat, blazer, t-shirt and trousers. He was definitely trendy. He did poetry with no music. The band joined with him on his second poem. He was a Christian poet and now the screaming made sense.

There was a ten minute interval and when we went to get a drink, we lost our seats. By this time the venue was packed, I imagine there were about 200 people in the venue. There was nowhere to sit and hardly any place to stand so you could see the stage. After, walking around for a bit and bumping into some old friends, we finally found a spot.

The first act after the interval was Deola and Lanre. They gave an amazing spoken word piece. Still not sure what it was about but I know it was good and the crowd loved it. They finished with the line ‘listen when a man speaks’, go figure.

Second was a young man, Parabello, who M.y.M introduced as her ex boyfriend. A slightly nervous poet (maybe because of M.y.M‘s introduction) his first attempt fell short. His second was better. His last poem was titled ‘Player’, the crowd loved it and it was his best.

Other acts included Samantha Chioma, who read a 10 step guide to get a Christian girl to like you, which I recognised as one of her blog posts.

Toby and Nicole from The Roundhouse Poetry Collective performed a duet- I can safely say this my type of poetry. It was ambiguous, open and inspiring. Charlie, who is a rapper, also made his way to the stage, with a spoken word piece. He was then joined by singer Nina and together they performed a song called ‘A thing call love’.

We had the open mic section, which is always interesting. My favourite performer was a poet called Obie. The crowd loved his confidence and flow and his honesty about Christian relationships was definitely a crowd pleaser.

The headliner was the (jet-lagged) American poet Joshua Bennet. Now studying in Oxford Joshua has performed in front of President Obama and starred in a TV series on the HBO channel in the US. He performed three amazing pieces, his classic ’10 Things I Want To Say To A Black Woman’ as ever made the ladies swoon.

The highlights of the evening for me were Lovelive 6938,Deola and Lanre, Obie from the open mic section and the host MyM. She finished the evening by plugging her one woman show at “the Cochrane Theatre on the 23rd April”.

“What did you think of it?” my friend asked as we made our way back to Liverpool Street station. “Yeah, I thought it was good. M.y.M was really funny.” “She was. I want to go to her show on the 23rd”. “Really”? “Yeah, we should go.” “OK, let’s go.”
See you then!

Writing blogs and keeping journals are really not my thing, surprising for a graduate in journalism, however when asked to do one for Rogue-star I jumped at the chance. Who am I? I bet your asking, really the question is who are we? RuebenMia is the name of our clothing company; and by our, I mean Rueben Wright and Mia Elliott. We want our clothing to be a part of your world!

Fashion is all about the freedom to express yourself; it’s about communicating who you are to the world without having to say a word, so why are we allowing so many celebrities to dictate trends and styles to us? Most magazines are infiltrated with artists who duplicate each other’s style. Are we really living in a world where women and men who we have never met can organise what we choose to wear and what we accept as fashionable.

The initial reason that we began RuebenMia is because we are both unique and we love it! The concept of our brand is tailor made one off treasure items. Key pieces that you can treasure, feel and look so good in that you want to hug yourself. (just joking)
All of our best selling jackets are hand made by either myself or Mia. What fun is it walking around looking just like everyone else?

We are quite obsessive about details; such as materials, colours & textures and buttons & linings. These are the things that make our brand unique. Hopefully our choice in fabrics, our personalities and the love that goes into our work shines through to the finished garment. Our clothes are fuelled with our energy and are designed to make you feel special.

If your world is colourful, if your world is sexy, if your world is powerful then your world is RuebenMia

The brand developed almost by chance we embarked on our first business adventure trading at Birmingham Clothes Show Live 2010. Initially we just wanted to inquire about taking part however on a whim with just over a month to the exhibition we decided to trade. Sometimes if you feel the timing is right and the opportunity is there then you simply have to seize the moment.

The show was a real eye opener as to what maintaining a brand involves. Being exposed to so much raw talent was an amazing experience as we saw first hand just how much talent and creativity there is in newly established designers. Receiving approval and advice from others designers helped to point us out in the direction.

Since Clothes Show we have been involved in a few fashion shows the last of which was Culture Shock back in February.
The ideal RuebenMia lady is a woman who is unique and has a different way of looking at fashion. Fashion is so diverse and open to interpretation. There are many languages of fashion thus she must be bilingual.

Feel free to take a look at some of our pics from a few of the things that we have done and give us your honest opinion.

You can find us on ASOS marketplace if you follow the link https://marketplace.asos.com/seller/ruebenmia/collection and in Camden Lock on a Saturday afternoon. We would love to see you down there. You can also check us out on Facebook or follow us on twitter @ruebenmia1.

If you’ve seen me perform over the past couple of years, you’d know almost all my stand-up sets start with me stating that I’m on stage with the intention of becoming one of the greatest comedians that ever lived. I was pondering on this whilst performing in Leeds and Huddersfield this weekend. I want to be remembered. I want to be significant. I also couldn’t help but think of Colonel Gaddafi.

This past week, Colonel Gaddafi has come under intense pressure from global political figures to step down as the leader of Libya. We all know how easily dictators give up when people ask them to stop. What is interesting is that, as with other dictators, I don’t believe he set out to do evil. He probably loves Libya, but like Ike Turner quickly realised that he may not be able to maintain control until he gets violent. On the one hand he’s a deranged control freak, but on the other hand a loving passionate man who just wants to be significant. But hey, what’s love got to do with it?

The Oscars were sufficient proof of people’s need to feel more important than they actually are. People slate certain actors for walking past a lot of the journalists on the red carpet, but what really shocks us, is them not basking in the spotlight as much as we would. Deep down what we all need is support and people need it differently. After the earthquake in New Zealand, Prince William and Kate Middleton thought it helpful to sign a book of condolence. Thanks for doing your part Your Highness. Some actors just need people to go out and watch the movie and review them favourably, minus all the media attention. Jennifer Hudson just needed some kind of invisible bra support that would help us forget how fat she used to be.

Our need for support means we are as important as people make us. I’m as funny as my last show or blog entry. Judging by how many of you Facebook me to tell me how hilarious Comic’s View is…I’m about as important to you as professionalism is to Charlie Sheen. I’m pretty sure my girlfriend doesn’t even read this blog and I’d like to believe I’m more important to her than the gossip on Facebook… lol how foolish I am. Clearly, we all have to get creative in finding our importance in life and just try not to mess it up like I just did by mentioning my girlfriend or Galliano did with his anti-Semitic rants. This is a man who was a top designer for Christian Dior but has now been sacked for declaring his love for Hitler. That’s life there, Sod’s Law. I’m sure it’s this one time I mention her, she will read this article and now a man can’t even wish death upon Jews in Parisian restaurant anymore without someone filming it and putting it on Youtube…*sigh*

How do you find your importance? A restaurant in London announced this week they would start serving ice cream made with human breastmilk. That will sure enough get them the attention they wanted. A luxury hotel in Paris with heated pools, massage salons and a-la-carte menus is now available exclusively for dogs. Right now, as you read my article, there’s a dog living a life better than yours. Is that dog more important than you? Depends who wants to know. If you want to know, the answer is no. Know your importance.
